About

Bradish Johnson Co., Limited

Bradish Johnson Co., Limited (BJC) was organized and underwritten in 1897 by 14 heirs of Bradish Johnson (1811-1892).  Then, as now, the purpose is to own and manage real estate, principally holdings in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.  A substantial portion of the original acreage was acquired around 1850 from the former property of John McDonough, the benefactor of public schools in Baltimore and New Orleans.

Today, most of the land consists of marshland and open water southwest of the Mississippi River, below New Orleans in Plaquemines Parish.  The Company manages oil and gas leases on the underground mineral rights as well as top land rights to various hunting licenses and land restoration efforts.

A board of seven seats directs the company.  The stockholders elect their volunteer board members annually.  The qualifications are experience, interest, and capacity for active participation in the affairs of the corporation.  Stock ownership is not a requirement, but non-stockholding members must be related to Bradish Johnson or his shareholding descendants by blood or marriage.  Day-to-day operations are conducted from a New Orleans office.
